Employment & Training Upgrade – Part One

Earlier this week, I identified how healing must come before worrying about the skill set of an Indigenous person. But what if they happened … together.

What if every skill upgrade initiative for Indigenous people also included:
– A module on internalized oppression (and why they are going to feel like they cannot and will not succeed).
– A module on cross-cultural relationships (because Indigenous working for non-Indigenous IS cross-cultural).
– A module on cultural expectations (so often different than Indigenous values).

And what if each initiative staffed an Indigenous support person, someone who has “been there, done that”, someone who will continue to be a contact/support person after employment starts.

If retention is your game (and it MUST become the game), it is time to revamp employment & training. Why?

Because the upgrade would definitely be a step towards reconciliation.
