Day 13 – The Power of Asking

I am awake, I am alive and this morning I am smiling as I contemplate the power of asking …

It is not something I used to do. When in the company of others, I would often share my opinion, give advice, or even judge/criticize what my friend was saying or doing. I am happy to say those days (for the most part) are behind me.

Now I ask. “Tell me more” in pure Brene Brown style is a foundational sentence in my vocabulary now. “Why are you doing this/that” is another? “What do you think you should do?” I inherited from my Mom as the most EMPOWERING question you can ask (helps them develop their wisdom and confidence) and “Do you want to know?” is the latest addition.

I use the last one before giving advice, before offering the opinion, rather than assuming they want to hear what I have to say. Instead, now I simply explain that based on my experience/education/research or whatever, I have a suggestion or idea that may help them. Then I ask if they want to hear it and I heed whatever their answer is.

I like this new more-humble existence, one that firmly recognizes that my lane does not come with the privilege to bulldoze into someone else’s. The result – those I am in relationship with seem happier, heard, more comfy in my presence and that is worth every ounce of humility I now carry.

What do you think my friend? Do you think these sentences could empower those you care for? If you are not sure, I invite you to try. You may be amazed at the results. I know … I was.

I love you!
