Accents – An Opportunity to Unpack

I have said this time and time again, “Unpacking will be a life-long process if done right.”

Case in point, I was getting in my treadmill time a few days ago and decided instead of music, I wanted to listen to a podcast. I chose Adam Grant because he’s awesome and a few minutes into the episode, I realized his guest had a VERY heavy accent (a French one, for those curious).

“WOW, that’s annoying!” was my initial, ingrained, honest first thought.

“WOW, you can’t be for diversity and think like THAT!” was my immediate second thought.

In a matter of minutes, I was used to her accent and able to focus on the amazing information she provided. I had unpacked, refusing to let ingrained barriers prevent me from learning.

So, the question is, when is the last time you unpacked? When is the last time you slammed a door out of habit and is that really the person you want to be?

I am thrilled I listened to the podcast and by the end, her accent reminded me of my Dad’s, a pleasant memory rather than a negative experience.

Accents – another chance to unpack.

The journey continues …

I love you!
